After 4 exciting years in the Norwegian army, Jan and a colleague teamed up with two police officers to create Aktor AS, a safety/guard company. While earning a Bachelor in marketing at IHM (The Institute of Higher Marketing) in Sweden Jan worked for a consulting company focusing on "Corporate Identity." His academic credentials were further strengthened with 2.5 years at Seattle University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and a duel MBA in Finance and International Business. He received his Ph.D. in 2004 from The Fielding Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, CA

Currently Jan is a visiting researcher with the Norwegian research institute, SINTEF, collecting data at the Norwegian telecom corporation, Telenor. He has worked with several organizations developing guidelines for reporting intellectual capital: MERITUM and E*know.net, (EU projects); the Organization for Economic Co-operation & Development (OECD), and has served in a high level task force in the United Nations. His research methods are centered on participatory action research and case studies using grounded theory and phenomenography.
